Mission
West Village Nursery School (WVNS) is committed to creating a warm and welcoming early educational environment that helps children feel increasingly capable and eager to explore their ideas, practice newly emerging skills, and gain fulfillment from being part of a group. Our cooperatively-owned preschool is rooted in a progressive, play-based approach and is run by skilled early educational professionals, while providing ample opportunities for parent participation in the classroom and beyond in order to foster community and connection.
Vision
Our vision at WVNS is to see and educate the whole child. We want every family to feel that they and their children are seen as individuals with their own unique strengths and values. Students leave WVNS with the emotional and pre-academic skills needed for the next step in their educational journey, and families will feel equipped to support their child.
Values
1. Play at the Center of Learning
Young children are active learners who make sense of the world around them through play. Through their interaction with open-ended materials — such as clay, paint, blocks, water and sand — children actively construct meaning and understanding of their world as well as develop social-emotional skills that are essential to their well-being and success. 2. Embracing each Child’s Unique Journey
Child development occurs along a continuum and every child develops at their own pace. Teachers provide a setting in which children are allowed and encouraged to make independent choices, discoveries, and mistakes, while building awareness of the broader group dynamics.
3. The Co-operative Experience
Parent participation and partnership provide significant benefits to both parents and students by bringing home and school closer together. Whether helping in or outside the classroom in support of our co-op, parents gain a deeper understanding of their own children and of their child within a larger group setting. Children equally benefit by becoming acquainted with the members of our cooperative community at an early age, expanding their world in a safe and supportive way.
